New Release Round-Up 2nd July 2021

OUT TODAY
'Utopian Ashes' is a collaboration between Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie and Savages vocalist Jehnny Beth, exploring the breakdown of a fictional marriage across ten darkly drawn torch songs, backed by trio of Gillespie's bandmates and Beth's longtime partner and collaborator Johnny Hostile. It's available on CD, LP and an indies exclusive clear vinyl, plus we've got a handful of 12"x12" photographic prints to give away with purchases of the album, while stocks last (pop in a note in with your order if you're interested in one of these).

Laura Mvula bounces back from being controversially and unceremoniously dropped by her previous record label with the vibrant, 80s-inflected 'Pink Noise' (CD, Pink LP and indies Orange LP). Channelling the synth-funk of Prince and the yachty production of 'Thriller'-era MJ while maintaining the impressively layered chamber-like vocal arrangements which Mvula brought to her previous work, 'Pink Noise' is a defiant statement of liberation from an ever evolving artist.

'Get Up Sequences, Pt. 1' is the latest from Brighton collective The Go! Team, offering joyous anthems built upon knockabout, baggy hip-hop instrumentals. We've still got a handful of the Dinked Edition left for this one, if you're quick. There's also a couple of the Dinked Archive reissue of 'Rolling Blackouts' to be had.

'Forest Of Your Problems' is a third full-length from woodwose post-punks and ghillie suit enthusiasts Snapped Ankles, available on CD and indies "protestor edition" on "forest floor" eco mix vinyl. Their Teutonic forest rhythms take on a more reflective hue this time around but their drily delivered barbed takes on the Capitalocene retain their edge.

Jon Hopkins 'Piano Versions' is an ambient piano covers EP conceived as a sister record to 2014's 'Asleep Versions'.

REISSUES
Joni Mitchell's early Reprise output up to and including the stone cold classic 'Blue' is issued in deluxe 4CD and 4LP sets as part of the Joni Mitchell Archive series (message us if you're interested in one of these). 'Angel Dream', a reimagined version of Tom Petty's 'She's The One' soundtrack which originally came out as an RSD piece, receives a standard CD issue.

A couple of Impulse! essentials are reissued on the audiophile Verve Acoustic Sounds series: Sonny Rollins' label debut and Oliver Nelson's 'The Blues And The Abstract Truth' which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and features the heavyweight frontline of Eric Dolphy and Freddie Hubbard alongside Bill Evans, Paul Chambers and Roy Haynes.

PRE-ORDERS

A new Low album is always a cause for celebration at SK Towers and we're mightily looking forward to 'HEY WHAT', their third collaboration with producer BJ Burton following the extraordinary 'Double Negative'. Damon Albarn announced his first solo album in seven years, 'The Nearer The Fountain, More Pure The Stream Flows', taking its mouthful of a title from a John Clare poem. Guitarist Steve Gunn's 'Other You' boasts a stellar line-up of guests including Mary Lattimore, Jeff Parker and Juliana Barwick.
