SK Albums of the Year 2022

We're delighted to announce our Sound Knowledge Album of the Year, divined by highly scientific and arcane methods, is Superchunk's 'Wild Loneliness'.
AOTY // Superchunk - Wild Loneliness (Merge)
Having blasted Trump's America on the excoriating, fuzzed-out 'What a Time to Be Alive', the latest LP from the Chapel Hill veterans was a more optimistic-sounding, expansive affair, incorporating strings and horns along with cameos from Sharon Van Etten, Mike Mills and, on perfect slice of power pop 'Endless Summer', members of Teenage Fanclub. Under its hooky melodies it smuggled serious messages about climate change and the alienation of the pandemic years, allying big choruses to tight playing and real substance to make one of the best records of their thirty-plus-year career and our Album of the Year. Also, Album Cover of the Year or what?
Elsewhere, we were won over by the soulful debuts from a veteran LA songwriter and a British indie supergroup, a pastoral post-rock epic from a London octet, and reinventions and career-bests from some longtime shop favourites.
