We're delighted to announce that our very own Ann Liu Cannon will be launching her debut EP with a performance at the shop on Friday 23rd August.
London-based but Wiltshire-raised- indeed, her first job was tending to the Sound Knowledge shelves on Saturdays- Ann was plucked from the Camden live scene by renowned producer and friend of the shop Ethan Johns (Paul McCartney, Tom Jones, Laura Marling) leading her to sign her first publishing deal with BMG. They spent a year in the studio creating her debut album, now in its final stages of completion. Meanwhile, she’s opened for Beans on Toast on his UK tour, played The Great Escape Festival for Bob Harris' Under The Apple Tree Stage, and recently finished recording her debut EP, 'Chalk', with Spiritual Records, funded by the Arts Council. She’s currently guitarist and vocalist in Lewis Ofman’s live band, who are touring the US, Canada, Mexico and Europe.
'Chalk' takes its name and theme from Wiltshire's ridgeway, the chalk valley where she grew up. Her father was set to publish a book on the stones of Britain just before his passing, and she drew from his teachings of the life cycle of chalk - a stone made up of fossilised remains, creating the land in which her community lives - as she began to re-build her own life in the wake of the death.
The 5-track EP features; two live, one-take tracks - 'Papa's Gone to the Clear Sky' featuring musicians Esme White, Emmelin, and Nayomhi, and 'Clockwork' - two tracks produced in Spiritual Bar's brand new studio, re-creating the dance-infused intensity of her time in Camden with 'Sinking Foxes', and sharing midnight walks across the ridgeway with her father, the title track, 'Chalk' - and the final track, recorded at Ogbourne St George Parish Church, features her fathers nearest and dearest performing a rendition of 'Lord of the Dance'.
Entry is free and we'll have copies of 'Chalk' for sale on the night.
